Getting Started

Set up your account and create your first revenue contract in under 90 seconds.

1

Create your account

Visit deferredrev.app/login and enter your email address. We'll send you a magic link — no password required. Click the link in your inbox and you're in.

Magic links expire after 10 minutes. If yours has expired, just request a new one from the login page.

Your account starts with a 14-day free trial of the Growth plan. No credit card required.

2

Explore sample data

Every new account comes with 3 pre-loaded sample contracts so you can see how DeferredRev works before entering your own data. You'll find them on the Contracts page in your dashboard.

The sample contracts include:

  • Acme Corp — $120,000 annual contract, recognized monthly
  • TechStart Inc — $85,000 annual contract, started mid-month
  • GlobalPay Ltd — $240,000 multi-year contract

Click any contract to see its revenue schedule, recognized amounts, and deferred balance. You can delete the sample data at any time from Settings.

3

Create your first real contract

Navigate to Contracts in the sidebar and click New Contract. Fill in the following fields:

  • Customer name — The company or individual paying for the service
  • Contract value — The total amount of the agreement (e.g. $120,000)
  • Start date — When the service period begins
  • End date — When the service period ends
DeferredRev uses straight-line recognition by default, spreading the contract value evenly across the service period. This is the most common method for ASC 606 compliance.

Click Create Contract and your revenue schedule is generated instantly.

4

View your revenue schedule

After creating a contract, click on it to see the revenue schedule. You'll see a 12-month waterfall showing how revenue flows from deferred to recognized each month.

The schedule includes:

  • Monthly recognition amount — The amount recognized each period
  • Deferred balance — The remaining liability after each period
  • Cumulative recognized — Total revenue recognized to date

Navigate to Waterfall in the sidebar to see all contracts combined in a single view — perfect for board meetings and month-end close.

5

Export journal entries

Navigate to Journal Entries in the sidebar. Each month, DeferredRev generates the appropriate debit and credit entries:

  • Debit: Deferred Revenue
  • Credit: Revenue

Export options:

  • CSV — Download a CSV file you can import into any accounting software
  • QuickBooks Online — Push entries directly to QBO (requires QuickBooks integration setup — see QuickBooks Integration)

Select the period you want to export and click Export.

6

Next steps

Now that you're up and running, here are some things to explore:

  • Connect QuickBooks Online — Push journal entries directly to your QBO account
  • Import from Stripe — Pull in your existing Stripe subscriptions as revenue contracts
  • Invite your team — Add team members from Settings → Team
